On God’s Love, Choice, and Pleasure

Reflections on Ephesians 5:10, I Corinthians 10:5, Romans 8:7-8, and Hebrews 11:6 —

God’s choice and love never change

No matter what I do

His grace is boundless and unending

His mercy always true

But His pleasure is dependent

on the attitude of my soul

I can’t expect Him to be pleased

when my heart is vain and cold [1],[2]

He promises full commitment

He promises love untold

But He never promises to be pleased

That’s a right that He withholds

As a father, it makes sense to me

I love my kids alike

but my pleasure I reserve for when

they do the things I like

You say that most were not well-pleasing [3]

Impossible it does seem

Are You really difficult to satisfy?

Do You always find fault with me?

Then You bring to my attention

a simple truth that’s clear:

Jesus is my righteousness

I can rest when He is near

So I seek to learn what honors You [4]

while assured that You’ll be true

I want my life to bring You delight

and be pleasureful to You
